Miss The Podcasts?
Yeah, so do we. We are still going to update chadhasty.com with podcasts, but most of the time the update is out of our hands. So now we will also be posting podcasts here: PODCASTS!
You can download to your iPod or any MP3 device. The first clip is from yesterdays show when we discussed LABA and alcohol sales in Lubbock and we had some fun with it.
AJ Letter of the Week
This weeks award goes to the editorial board of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal for their editorial about the animal shelter.
Select new animal shelter site carefully
Lubbock Avalanche-JournalWednesday, July 23, 2008
Story last updated at 7/23/2008 – 1:42 amFIDO NEEDS A HOME – we all agree with that. What we haven’t come to agreement on is where his temporary home will be. A new animal shelter has been needed for years – many years – and, at long last, we are going to have one. But where? That seems to be the question tearing us apart.
First it was McAllister Park off Milwaukee Avenue, and then discussions moved toward the more central location of Clapp Park off University.
Wherever it is built needs to be more accessible than its current location, and it needs to be acceptable to the citizens of Lubbock as a whole – as well as to the neighborhood where it is to be built.
Monday’s town hall meeting was a step in the right direction. We need to have open dialog with each part of our community where placement is being considered. Questions from the public need to be heard and answered by the City Council.
We all want the same thing: a more friendly, open and accessible way to entice the public to consider adopting a pet. If you’ve looked into their eyes, you know some of the most loyal dogs and cats around are sitting there, just waiting to be loved.
Let’s unite, not divide. Let’s sit down, and find a place that works for the new shelter. This is a positive move for Lubbock, and we need to come together. Do it for Fido.
This is what many in the news biz call “fluff” or “crap”. When the editorial board of the newspaper or record in town writes an editorial it’s supposed to have the things called facts to back up their point. Instead the AJ tries to tug at the readers heart strings by asking you to look into their (dogs) eyes. The last few lines made me laugh as well. It seems as though the animal shelter is going to cause a civil war in Lubbock. This issue is the issue that the AJ thinks divides the city? Really?
I’m still waiting for the AJ to do an editorial on whether or not the State should change the law regarding petitions and booze.
Oklahoma City Has A WNBA Team!
So according to this this story, the newest WNBA will be called the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Wait, I’m sorry that’s a new minor league baseball team name. No, wait…it’s an NBA team? A real NBA team named themselves the Thunder? Well, congrats to the OKC Thunder you have beaten the Charlotte Bobcats for the worst team name in the NBA.
Are you kidding me? The Thunder?? What will the logo be? Will Garth Brooks be signed to sing “The Thunder Rolls” before tipoff at every home game? I thought the WNBA, MLS, and Minor League Baseball could only have stupid names like the Thunder or Shock or Dynamo.
Thanks for the laugh Oklahoma City and may the Thunder roll!
AJ Letter of the Week
Every Sunday I will be posting what I consider to be the Lubbock AJ’s “Letter of the Week”. I will also post my thoughts on the letter. I also want your thoughts as well! Congrats to Jennifer Villergas for being the first.
Diner frustrated by size of restaurant portions
I am a patient who has undergone lap-band surgery. This means I physically cannot eat more than about 1/4 cup of food in one sitting. It has become a great source of frustration for me to eat out at local restaurants.
I have made requests at multiple establishments in town to allow me to purchase from the children’s menu. I have yet to be allowed to do this. This is not simply a question of frugality. I just really dislike wasting food, which inevitably happens when I order an adult-sized portion.
I have had many servers suggest I simply take a to-go box. This is absurd! First of all, consider how many doggie bags I would have littering my refrigerator. I would also like to point out I really do not like leftovers that have been re-heated!
I know I am not the only one who declines a to-go box when dining out. I have a card that identifies me as a post-surgical patient who cannot eat much. Why, then, do restaurants make me order so much food that will just go to waste? Why do I have to pay for food I know I will not eat?
Lubbock is a large community with many bariatric patients. I know I cannot be the only one who is frustrated with this problem. Obviously we spent plenty of time eating more than our fair share of food; when do we get to stop?
JENNIFER VILLEGAS/Lubbock
This letter can go into the stupid person category. I still laugh at this letter every time I read it and I still can’t believe it’s real. Does this person not understand what her kitchen is? It’s not just to warm up your left overs, you can actually cook your own meals too! The great thing about cooking at home is that it is cheaper than dinning out and you can decide how big of meals you want.
It sounds like to me Jennifer is trying to play the victim role over and over again. I’m sure the blames the restaurants for making her stuff her fat face full of food and now she is blaming them for not allowing an ADULT to order off a kids menu. There is a reason it’s called a KIDS menu you idiot. You chose to dine out, so live with it. If you can’t eat that much then you are just wasting money by eating out anyway! Stay home and cook! You say you have a lot of “doggie bags” in your fridge? The MOST you should have is 7, and that’s ONLY if you go out every night and I don’t know of anyone who does that. Take some responsibility and get over it! If you go out to dinner and you’re not a kid…you order off the adult menu and get ready to take food home or just throw it away!
Jennifer also asks why she must pay for food she wont eat. Because you ordered it you idiot! When I order a steak and side items I know I may not eat everything…most of the time I don’t. I don’t get to negotiate the price because of that.
Are people really this stupid out there? Do we really have to cater to EVERYONE? The letter writer is the type of person that makes everything about them. They have to make sure everyone caters to them and you know what? She isn’t the only one. So many people are like this out there. Pathetic.
Alcohol Sales In Lubbock?
Councilman Todd Klein will appear on LFN Tuesday morning to discuss this story from the AJ:
A city councilman thinks Lubbock should prepare for the day the city legalizes alcohol sales in case it ever does.
Councilman Todd Klein will propose a resolution to study zoning districts best suited for alcohol sales at Thursday’s council meeting. He said he also hopes it sheds light on what he considers unfair state laws that make it difficult for voters to petition for an election.
Other cities in the region, including Wolfforth just southwest of Lubbock, have passed some for of legal alcohol sales. Klein said he has never seen a study on how much sales tax the city could garner, but says “we could only assume it’s a fairly significant number and would most certainly continue to grow.”
So should Lubbock vote on Alcohol sales without a petition?
