PLACES TO EAT IN DALLAS

Going to the Cotton Bowl? Want a few idea’s of places to eat while in Dallas? No problem. Since I’m from the DFW area and still head over there when I can here are a few of my personal favorites.

  • La Cubanita: Very good food (Cuban) and I am a big fan of their ribs. If you like mojitos, then this is the place for you. Located at 4444 McKinney Avenue. Mention you heard about them from Lubbock’s First News with Chad Hasty.
  • Taverna: Pizza and Pasta. I find this place a little more laid back. Some of our listeners have gone in before after hearing me talk about them on the air. Good people and good food. Again, tell them you heard/read about them from LFN with Chad Hasty. Located at 3210 Armstrong Avenue
  • Cyclone Anayas Mexican Kitchen: Rarely do I recommend a place if I’ve only been once, but this place was fantastic. Good good good Mexican food. Located at 3211 Oak Lawn Ave. @ Hall St. AND 5225 Beltline Road, Just East of Dallas North Tollway.
  • Coal Vines: Pizza and Wine, what else do you need to know? Very good pizza…the wine is a bit overpriced, but that’s to be expected.Located at 2404 Cedar Springs Rd.

Hopefully this will give some of you some ideas when traveling to the metroplex this weekend or any other weekend.

ONE YEAR…THANK YOU LUBBOCK!

A year ago I began hosting Lubbock’s First News and started down the fun road of weekday talk radio. I had been doing The Chad Hasty Show for just about 2 years when I was approached about LFN and of course I jumped at the chance. I love doing radio, it’s who I am and I have fun doing it. My love for radio and expressing ideas while having fun is why I still do the Saturday show.

There were many obstacles to overcome and to be honest I didn’t have 100% support from everyone inside the building at first. Some thought that a 25 year old fresh out of college couldn’t do morning radio. However, and not to brag, but I wasn’t just a 25 year old kid out of college. I started in radio in 2003 at 950AM with Williams and Hyatt as an intern, then moved on to produce the morning show (disaster) at the same station. Then when Williams and Hyatt moved over to 1340AM…so did I. Then I was offered the Saturday show on KFYO. In other words…I knew how to do radio and how not to do radio. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are things I still have to learn and I learn something new it seems everyday. KFYO’s Robert Snyder knew all of this and my passion and because of his effort and confidence I am able to on the radio in the mornings. (Those who can’t stand me can forward your complaints to him). Another person to thank is Ryan Hyatt. Hyatt is a mentor and friend who helped show me the ropes of radio, and still gives me advice today. It always helps to have someone (who isn’t family) that believes in what you do and can be blunt, honest, and trustworthy. I also have to thank Rex Andrew and Matt Coppel. Without them the show wouldn’t be the same. We don’t always agree with each other, but both Rex and Coppel bring a unique and informed opinion and perspective to the show. They are great to work with and well it’s just a lot of fun to do the show with them. There are others in the building…and out of the building to thank, and most of them know who they are, but if I wrote about them all this would be really long.

HOWEVER, there is someone else to thank. YOU. When I first joined LFN it was a much different show and the audience didn’t seem that involved. Since then the ratings have skyrocketed, there are more callers, and more people are emailing the show. We even have more and more younger listeners listening to the show and getting involved in talk radio. I think interaction is the key when it comes to talk radio. Sure I love to give my opinion, but I also enjoy hearing yours. Sure we may disagree on an issue or two, but who said debate was a bad thing? And yes, there are some people who can’t stand me, but…they still listen. The more calls and emails we get, the better. We always have the phone lines open for you and as we head into 2009 I hope we get even more calls, new callers, and emails.

After one year on the air on LFN, I thank each and every one of you. You let us inside your home, car, and business to entertain and inform and without you I wouldn’t get to do what I love doing. It is still amazing one year later that I get to do this as a job. Keep tuning in, keep calling in or emailing in, and tell your friends about us.

Thank You Lubbock!

Councilman John Leonard Assaulted This Morning

From the AJ:

City Councilman John Leonard was assaulted early this morning when he got into an altercation with neighbors about their loud music, Lubbock police said.

Leonard, 46, got into an altercation with three men in a second-floor apartment at the Dakota Arms, in the 6700 block of 82nd Street, according to the police report. He called police at 12:55 a.m. today.

He and 34-year-old Jessica Haris, who were in the first-floor apartment, went to the apartment directly above them several times to ask the men to turn down the loud music after midnight, Police Lt. Neal Barron said.

The altercation between the three men and Leonard occurred just outside the second-floor apartment. Leonard went to University Medical Center in a personal vehicle. His condition was unknown.

Haris was not injured.

The suspects were not at the apartment when police arrived. They have been identified, but had not yet been charged, Barron said.

We will have more on this later when more details come out.

LUBBOCK WILL VOTE!

From KFYO.com:

Lubbock County commissioner’s this morning officially validated signatures that will call for a local option election in May pertaining to alcohol sales within Lubbock County specifically for beer, wine and liquor. The Lubbock County Office of Elections presented the results of a pending alcohol petition to the Lubbock County Commissioners at their meeting this morning. Organizers submitted 25,263 valid signatures for the Mixed Beverage local option and organizers submitted 25,720 valid signatures for the off premises local option. Lubbock County Elections Administrator Dorothy Kennedy predicted voter turnout could reach 60 percent. Both numbers are in excess of 35 percent of the number of registered voters in Lubbock County who voted in the most recent gubernatorial election. The election will be May 9th of next year.

This is no big suprise at all to me. Good job to everyone at Let Lubbock Vote, and everyone else who wanted your voices heard. Next up is the election on May 9th. No matter how you vote on May 9th…at least you get to vote.

Eddie Murphy To Play The Riddler In The Next Batman?

The Sun is reporting that the 3rd Batman installment which is set to open in 2010. Right now the film is working under the name Gotham. Eddie Murphy has reportedly signed on to play the Riddler, Shia LaBeouf (who I can’t stand for some reason) will play Robin (blah), and Rachel Weisz will be Catwoman.

Here is the article: LINK

Well…I’m not sure if I like the Robin character being introduced or not. Again, I don’t like Shia LaBeouf, but I will trust Nolan. He hasn’t let anyone down yet with his verson’s of Batman.

Also, the 3rd installment of Batman is supposed to end as a cliffhanger…is Batman dead or alive? Good way to end it I think. If they make a lot of money…here comes the 4th installment. If not, bye bye Batman.

So what do you think about the new cast?

AFTERNOON RUNDOWN 12.15.08

  • Tech Hockey Is Done

We’ve been hearing the news/excuses for about two weeks now that Texas Tech Hockey still owed about $10,000 in rent and were kicked out of the Colisseum. Tech Hockey Coach and Liar, Paul Fioroni basically told the media that it wasn’t his fault and that the check was in the mail. Well that wasn’t true. Fioroni then told the media he would have a check to the City of Lubbock by Saturday for over $56,000 in rent. As of 5pm on Monday…no check. From what my understanding is…even if the team were to pay today the city would not consider allowing them back in the Colisseum.

Reporter Throws Shoes At Bush

President Bush was in Baghdad today on his farwell tour. During the press conference a reporter from Iraq threw his shoes at President Bush.

Here is the video: LINK

I must say that Bush surprised me with his moves. Great job Mr. President! Think Obama has that kind of reaction time? I doubt it. In the words of Austin Powers…seriously who throws shoes?

Edit: The reporter worked for a news agency out of Cairo, but he was an Iraqi.
